Paul Van Dyk

Van Dyk has risen to prominence as one of Europe’s most popular DJs, artists and remixers in only a few years.

As a teenager, he listened to the rather sombre UK indie sounds of the Smiths, Depeche Mode and New Order but he was taken with the thriving club scene in Berlin and began DJing in 1988. He secured his first gig at Turbine and made such an impression on his debut that he soon became a popular DJ on the booming Berlin dance music scene. He went on to become the long-standing resident at ‘Dubmission’ at the E-Werk club in Berlin. He released his first 12-inch single, ‘Perfect Day’, under the name Visions Of Shiva in 1992 on the German label MFS. He has since gone on to release a number of albums and several successful singles.

He has earned a highly-respected name as a remixer and has worked on tracks for artists including New Order, Inspiral Carpets, Sven Vath, Secret Knowledge, BT, Tori Amos, Dina Carroll, Amen, Qattara, Tilt, Age Of Love, Curve and, in the late 90s Binary Finary and Faithless. As a DJ, Van Dyk has a huge following in Europe and he has played at every major club in the world. Like Sasha, John Digweed and Carl Cox, he presently has a bimonthly residency at Twilo in New York City. He has established his UK popularity at Sheffield’s Gatecrasher club with a blend of melodic, uplifting trance and pumping house, a sound that he pioneered and popularized. His own singles have been massively popular with clubbing audiences, most notably ‘Words’ and a reworking of a track from his first album, ‘For An Angel 98′. The latter was one of 1998’s most popular club tracks, a number 1 in the UK dance charts and appeared in many DJs’ lists of their Top 10 tunes of the year. It is typical of Van Dyk’s style: a pounding kick-drum, layered with a beautifully melodic riff and a hands-in-the-air breakdown.

In 1998, a three-CD collection of his remixes, Vorsprung Dyk Technik was released to critical acclaim and commercial success. It demonstrated the versatility and skill of an artist/producer at the peak of his ability. His remix of Humate’s ‘Love Stimulation’ was a UK Top 20 hit in early 1999. Later in the year, Van Dyk was voted number 5 in the UK’s DJ magazine’s Top 100 DJs in the world.
