Madonna and Charli XCX Relive Their Club-Kid Origins on "Danceteria Afterhours"

The reworked Confessions II standout lands a day before Soft Cell's final album, also named after the Manhattan club where Madonna got her start.

Madonna and Charli XCX released "Danceteria Afterhours" on Thursday (Sept. 24) through Warner Records. It's their first song together: a reworked "Danceteria," the Confessions II highlight in which Madonna revisits the New York nightclub that launched her career. The new version trims Madonna's part to make room for Charli's own origin story.

Two origin stories, one dance floor

On the album version, Madonna's verses are a roll call of early-'80s downtown New York. Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Fab 5 Freddy, Debi Mazar, doorman Haoui Montaug and the Rock Steady Crew all make the guest list. She also recounts DJ Mark Kamins playing her demo of "Everybody" at the club, the break that led to her first record deal with Sire Records.

That original, produced by Madonna with Andrew Watt, Cirkut and Stuart Price, interpolates the hook of Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side," earning Reed a posthumous co-writing credit. The Afterhours mix keeps Haring, Basquiat, Fab 5 Freddy, Montaug and the Rock Steady Crew, but drops the Mazar mention and the Kamins story to make room for Charli.

Charli answers with her own timeline. Her verses open in 2007, when she was 15 and starting out in London. Then they jump to Los Angeles in 2015, where she fell into the orbit of A.G. Cook, the late SOPHIE and PC Music. She doesn't pretend the scene was exactly sober, either.

From Instagram shade to the same DJ booth

The team-up follows a very public exchange. Charli's single "Rock Music," from her album Music, Fashion, Film, declared the dance floor finished. In May, Madonna posted an Instagram caption widely read as a reply: "If your Dance floor feels dead / Maybe you're playing the wrong music."

On June 23, the two sat side by side at Saint Laurent's spring/summer 2027 menswear show in Paris. That night, Madonna and Saint Laurent's Anthony Vaccarello hosted a Club Confessions party at the Paradis Latin cabaret. According to W Magazine, Charli joined Madonna and Stuart Price at the decks, the same night "Danceteria" was played in full for the first time.

In late June, Charli told Nick Grimshaw on BBC Radio 6 Music that the pair "had a mini break together, essentially," adding: "We went to Paris and we just couldn't stop hanging out with each other." The press release now calls "Danceteria Afterhours" "a celebration of the fearless beginnings and influences that shaped each artist's singular paths."

The same club, one day apart

"Danceteria Afterhours" isn't the only tribute to the club this week. Soft Cell's final studio album, also called Danceteria after the same venue, is out Friday (Sept. 25). According to the band, the club hosted the U.S. launch party for their 1981 debut, Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret.

The two stories overlap. Marc Almond has recalled seeing Madonna's first live performance at the club in 1982, and Soft Cell's title track name-checks her. The song first surfaced on a limited Record Store Day 12-inch in the U.K. on April 18, weeks before Madonna's own "Danceteria" debuted in her Confessions II film.

The album is also a farewell. Dave Ball, Almond's bandmate since the late 1970s, died in his sleep in October 2025, at 66, days after the pair finished it. "'Danceteria' is a love letter to New York in the early '80s," Almond said in June, adding that there can be no more Soft Cell recordings without Ball.

The band's announcement described the club as "a home for party people from all walks of life, sexualities and recreational appetites."

What's next

The rework follows August's "Love Sensation (Afterhours Mix)" with Kylie Minogue. Three limited-edition CD singles pair the new mix with Harry Romero's remix of "Danceteria" and the original. Confessions II, Madonna's 15th studio album, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in July.

Madonna is set to open the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday (Sept. 27), her first VMAs performance in 23 years. She leads this year's nominations with 13. The collaboration has sparked speculation that Charli could join her onstage, though neither artist has confirmed it.

Charli is on the U.S. leg of her Music, Fashion, Film tour, with U.K. and European dates starting in February 2027.
